The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS™, is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers.
It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.
IELTS is accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian, Irish and New Zealand academic institutions, by over 3,000 academic institutions in the United States, and by various professional organisations across the world.
IELTS is the only Secure English Language Test approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa customers applying both outside and inside the UK. It also meets requirements for immigration to Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

IELTS Academic or General Training?

There are two different types of IELTS tests you can take. The test you should choose depends on what you want to do with it. Before booking your test, make sure to check which test you need with the organisations you are applying to.
IELTS Academic test is designed for people planning to study in higher education or those seeking professional registration.
IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context that is why it is appropriate for people planning to study in high school or a vocational training program. People migrating to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK must take the IELTS General Training to prove their practical, everyday English language skills.

IELTS test format

IELTS tests four language skills and consists of four parts:
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
IELTS is available in two test formats: Academic or General Training.  All test takers take the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Listening, Reading and Writing must be completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them. The order in which these tests are taken may vary. The Speaking test will either be after a break on the same day as the other three tests, or up to a week before or after the other tests.
